To increase access to services by
promoting cooperation among service
providers, building and maintaining
communication and linkages with
other community partners.
TARGET POPULATION
Self-identified Aboriginal men and
male teens who are in need of
services and supportive resources,
Referrals from outside agencies,
Aboriginal men or male youth may
also be court ordered to attend the
Kizhaay Anishinaabe Niin programme
as part of a conditional sentence or
youth diversion programme.
ACTIVITIES WITH INDIVIDUALS
To identify male youth and men in
need of family violence services. To
assess individuals needs to
determine the extent of services
required. To undertake to intervene
in crisis situations. To refer
victims and/or perpetrators to
appropriate services. To link
abusers with legal services or
appropriate treatment services. To
provide ongoing liaison service and
follow up to ensure individual needs
are being met. To promote healthy
lifestyles by conducting home
visits, workshops, seminars and
public education forums. To know of
and work with community agencies to
support healthy Aboriginal families.
To promote violence free lifestyles.
To promote Aboriginal culture-based
healing. To support the development
of healing circles, peer support
groups and self-help processes to
assist in community healing,
positive self image development,
alternative discipline methods and
positive relationships specifically
focused on reducing men’s violence.
To work with other Aboriginal
organizations, mainstream
organisations and First Nations
staff to promote a co-ordinated
approach to addressing Violence
Against Aboriginal Women.
ACTIVITIES WITH COMMUNITY
To coordinate men’s and male teen’s
healing circles. To promote, by
programming and personal example,
the development of positive role
models in the community. To initiate
community development activities
which will lead to men and male
teens taking a stand and engaging
other men to end Violence Against
Aboriginal Women. To facilitate
community events to promote healing,
wellness, addictions free
activities, and cultural awareness
specifically focused on violence
free approaches. To develop, or
obtain, Aboriginal health promotion
materials. To facilitate the
positive re-establishment of
traditional male roles and
behaviour. To participate in the
development and establishment of
culturally sensitive services which
address Violence Against Aboriginal
Women. To facilitate the involvement
of Elders and traditional people,
who have undergone their own healing
and wellness journey. To promote the
Kizhaay Anishinaabe Niin
Initiatives.
OTHER COMMUNITY SERVICES
To establish a relationship with
community resources to facilitate
increased sensitivity and awareness.
To establish a system of referrals.
To assist, upon request,
non-Aboriginal agencies in order to
ensure that Aboriginal male clients
receive the service and support
required. To promote linkages
amongst community agencies so that
the Aboriginal community will have
greater access to holistic healing
and wellness approaches to working
with men. To facilitate the
understanding and support of
community agencies for the Kizhaay
Anishinaabe Niin Programme. |
