Education

You may not have been attending school for a lot of reasons before being sentenced to open custody/detention at Mee-Quam Youth Residence. However, while at Mee-Quam Youth Residence, you are expected to attend the on-site school. The teacher in charge has chosen to be there just like the staff have because they believe that they can help you get back into learning so you can get an education that will help you when you are released after your sentence to go home and continue to grow. In today’s work force, education is the key to getting jobs. The Mee-Quam Youth Residence teacher will work with you on an individual basis to determine where you are functioning academically and work out an academic plan that you can handle.

The teacher will assist you in returning to a school upon your release. If you were attending school in the community and your school welcomes you back, let this be known at your Case Management Plan meeting so if it can be worked out, continued to attend while serving your sentence might just be possible.

Mee-Quam Youth Residence School Classroom

Conduct and Behaviour

1. I will come prepared to work in class, each day to the best of my ability. I understand that regular attendance is important for educational success. Therefore the expectation is that I will begin school on time each day. If I am not ready for the first period, or refuse to attend school, I will start the following day and there will be a loss of school points.

2. I will be respectful of my teacher, MYR staff and other students in the classroom.

3. I will not swear or use inappropriate language or speak in defiance or disrespect with the teacher, MYR staff or other students.

4. I will stay on task (not interrupting others in class), and follow directions as given by the teacher or MYR staff.

5. I will stay in my seat unless given permission to move about by the teacher or MYR staff.

6. I will take care of the learning materials (textbooks, binders, calculators, etc.) on loan to me. I will pay or replace school equipment that I damage. Only school material is to be kept in my school binder. Any other material is considered contraband and will be confiscated. Possession of such material will lead to further consequences.

7. I will ask permission to go to the washroom at designated times to limit the disruption in the class. If I abuse my washroom breaks, MYR staff may required me to stay extra time in class at the end of the school day.

8. I understand that there will be loss of school points for absence from the school program, for time outs and non-participation in school. If I am ill (verified by youth workers) or if I have a scheduled appointment, no school points will be lost).

9. I understand that there are NO PERSONAL TIME OUTS FROM CLASS. Any issue that comes up must be dealt with after school hours. If I leave the classroom without permission I will not return until the next day. I may not leave the classroom at any time unless accompanied by MYR staff.

10. I understand that for a court appointment I will return to school the next day and for any other appointment I will return to school at the beginning o f the next period.

I understand that if I do not comply with these guidelines that I can be timed out, or receive a therapeutic withdrawal (duration to be determined by MYR staff).

Non-Attendance at School

We strongly discourage non-attendance at school. For whatever reason, you do not attend school while at Mee-Quam Youth Residence, a work program according to your capabilities will be put in place for all hours that school occurs. We encourage you to give school at Mee-Quam a chance as it is never too late to start working toward your future. Education is the key to a better life for you!
