You have rights while
serving you sentence at Mee-Quam Youth
Residence.
You
have the right first to have all of your
rights explained:
1) To
be cared for, without discrimination
to race, religion, ethnic origin or
your sexual orientation
2) To
expect and receive three
well-balanced meals a day, your own
proper clothing provided by your
family/guardian
3) To
medical care. If you have not been
examined within thirty days before
admission to Mee-Quam Youth
Residence, you will be examined by a
doctor as soon as possible, (no
later than 72 hours after your
admission). If you have urgent
medical or dental concerns, please
tell us and you will be taken care
of immediately.
4) To
receive and education according to
your academic needs and abilities.
5)To be
present and participate in an
individualized case
management/reintegration meeting
within 30 days of admission.
6) To
participate in planned recreational
activities and go outside for fresh
air.
7) To
not have corporal punishment
inflicted upon you by any employee
of Mee-Quam Youth Residence.
8) To
reasonable privacy and reasonable
use of your personal property.
9) To
be informed of the rules and
regulations of Mee-Quam Youth
Residence. You will also be informed
of the consequences of not following
the rules and regulations.
10) To
speak in private with and receive
visits from your family. The only
exception to this may be if you are
a Crown Ward of the Children’s Aid
Society and are not allowed contact
with family, or where a court order
restricts contact in.
11) To
speak, write or visit with your
lawyer, advocacy office and/or
members of parliament, as listed on
your contact list.
12) To
send and receive mail. There is no
limit to the amount of letters you
send; however Mee-Quam Youth
Residence will only provide three
(3) stamps per week. Any postage for
additional mail you wish to send
must be paid for by you from your
earned allowance.
13) To
be present if your mail is opened by
Office Manager/Staff for any reason
and to be informed why it is being
opened. This will only occur if your
mail is suspected of containing
prohibited items or there is reason
to believe the contents may cause
physical or emotional harm to you or
any other youth at Mee-Quam Youth
Residence.
14) To
participate in programs beneficial
for you and to have input into what
they are.
15) To
apply for Reintegration Leaves.
16) To
attend and participate in religious
services. Please inform staff of
your wish to participate in any
religious service upon admission.
17) To
apply to the Custody Review Board
for a review of your custody
placement, this may result in your
transfer of custody or a refusal to
issue a Reintegration Leave. Please
note that this must be filed within
thirty (30) days. The Custody Review

18) To
communicate and receive services in either
of Canada’s official languages, English or
