Dear Community Members:
As requested by the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres, the
Wasa-Nabin Programs across the province will now have to limit the amount of group
programs and focus more on conducting one on one sessions with clients. This
will begin in May 2009 and the new program calendar will reflect this new
format.
The Wasa-Nabin program services at-risk urban aboriginal children between the ages
13-18. The program addresses the following components:
For a definition of “at-risk”, the OFIFC defines it this way:
A child is “at-risk” if they:
1. Have been exposed to violence at school.
2. Have been exposed to violence at home.
3. Live in a large family.
4. Live in an overcrowded home.
5. Live in a home in which there is marital conflict/divorce.
6. Live in a single parent household.
7. Are exposed to open expressions of anger and hostility in the home.
8. Are born to teenage mothers.
9. Live in families which are poor or who have low socio-economic status
10. Are exposed to hostility in the parent-child relationship (when a good
relationship exists, it is easier for the child under stress to be resilient).
11. Live in a community in which social and other community supports are not
available.
12. Live in a family in which there are poor sibling relationships.
13. Have few positive relationships with older adults, such as Elders, teachers,
relatives etc.
14. Lives in a family with serious addiction challenges.
If you any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
